Choose the method from the finished geometry

Start with the opening or section the project needs after cutting. A circular penetration, straight wall opening, slab trench and irregular mass-concrete separation require different tooling. The comparison also needs to include scan results, water or slurry controls, rig or track fixing, temporary support and the weight of the released section.

What each method controls well

Wire sawing is useful when blade diameter or access restricts conventional saws. Track-mounted wall saws create accurate linear openings. Floor saws produce long controlled cuts from a horizontal surface. Core drills create defined round penetrations and can be combined as stitch drilling for larger or unusual openings.

These strengths do not remove the engineering around the cut. Reinforcement and post-tensioning, the stability of the remaining structure, support of the cut piece and safe access for removal remain project decisions.

Resolve common project objections before cutting

Noise, water, dust, access and programme are often raised after a method is proposed. They should be part of selection. Wet diamond systems need water and slurry management; dry operations need suitable dust extraction; large panels require planned support and lifting; occupied areas may need phased work zones and timing restrictions.

  • Can both faces of the element be accessed?
  • Is reinforcement, post-tensioning or a service conflict expected?
  • Where will water and slurry be collected?
  • How heavy is the released panel or core?
  • Can the rig, track, saw and lifting equipment be installed safely?
  • What finished tolerance and edge condition does the next trade require?

Build a quote that contractors can compare

Avoid asking only for a price per metre or per hole. A comparable quotation should state material, thickness, reinforcement information, dimensions, orientation, quantity, access, working hours, scanning responsibility, water and power, support, lifting, debris removal and the finished handover.

01What is the best method for cutting thick reinforced concrete?

Diamond wire sawing is often considered for thick or irregular reinforced sections, but access, wire route, support, lifting and the required cut geometry must be reviewed before selection.

02What is the difference between wall sawing and floor sawing?

Wall saws are track-mounted for controlled linear openings on walls and other faces. Floor saws travel over horizontal slabs or pavements for long cuts and controlled depth.

03Is core drilling a concrete cutting method?

Yes. Diamond core drilling cuts circular penetrations and can also be used in overlapping patterns for stitch drilling. It requires the same attention to scanning, set-out, support and slurry or dust control.

04Should the concrete be scanned before sawing?

Where reinforcement, post-tensioning or concealed services may affect the proposed cut, suitable scanning and engineering coordination should inform final set-out.
