GPR and radiography answer different site questions
GPR sends electromagnetic energy into concrete and interprets reflections from interfaces and embedded targets. It can be collected from one accessible face and is commonly used to map reinforcement patterns, post-tension risk, conduits and other anomalies across a proposed work zone.
Radiography uses ionising radiation to create an image through the element and normally requires controlled specialist procedures and access appropriate to the source and detector arrangement. It may be considered when the project needs a different form of image or when radar conditions are unsuitable. The radiography provider and project team must define regulatory and exclusion requirements.

Define the required deliverable before choosing the technology
A request to 'scan the slab' is too broad. State the proposed core, opening or anchor zone, the expected depth, the element orientation, available faces, drawings, known post-tensioning and the decision the survey must support. The scanning plan can then define grid extent, reference points, deliverable and any complementary investigation.

Understand what GPR cannot promise
GPR detects contrasts and reflections; it does not automatically label every target. Dense reinforcement, conductive material, moisture, depth and access can limit interpretation. A trained operator should combine radar patterns with drawings, visible construction details and the proposed intervention.
A scanning result reduces uncertainty but does not transfer the final cutting or drilling decision away from the responsible project team. When evidence remains ambiguous, the method may need a larger exclusion, an alternative position or a complementary investigation.
Use a project-specific selection rule
GPR is generally the practical first option for rapid, non-destructive mapping from one face before cutting, coring or drilling. Radiography should be assessed by an appropriately qualified provider when the required image, concrete condition and site controls justify it. The project should select the method that produces the evidence needed—not the one with the more impressive name.

01Is GPR the same as concrete X-ray?
No. GPR interprets reflected electromagnetic signals from within concrete. Concrete radiography uses ionising radiation to create an image and requires different access, specialist controls and regulatory arrangements.
02Can GPR identify post-tension cables?
GPR can help locate and map targets consistent with post-tension construction, but interpretation depends on the structure, congestion, depth, equipment and operator. Drawings and engineering knowledge remain important.
03Does GPR require access to both sides of a slab?
GPR can generally collect data from one accessible face. The selected grid and achievable depth still depend on the element and site conditions.
04Does a clear scan guarantee that cutting is safe?
No scanning method removes every uncertainty. Findings must be interpreted in context and coordinated with drawings, structural requirements and the exact proposed intervention.
