Compare the methods around the work face
Wet diamond coring uses water to cool the bit and transport cut material from the kerf. It is widely used for reinforced concrete and rig-based drilling, but needs a controlled supply and a reliable collection route for slurry. Dry coring is useful for suitable materials or water-sensitive areas when the equipment and bit are designed for the application and effective dust extraction is provided.

The bore schedule drives the equipment
Provide diameter, depth, quantity, material, reinforcement expectation, orientation and finished tolerance. A large or deep reinforced-concrete bore may need a rigid stand, engineered anchorage and staged core recovery. A smaller penetration may use a different drive unit and setup. The correct system is defined from the schedule and the structure, not from a generic per-hole rate.

Control overhead drilling and occupied areas
Overhead wet drilling requires a water-collection system and suitable wet vacuum, with electrical protection and a controlled breakthrough zone. In occupied areas, protect finishes and operations from water, slurry, dust, noise and released cores. Work zones and timing should be coordinated before drilling starts.
Dry drilling is not automatically the cleaner option. Without compatible dust extraction it can transfer the problem from slurry to airborne dust. The project should compare the complete containment system rather than only the drilling machine.

A useful core-drilling quotation states scanning responsibility, final set-out, rig fixing, drilling mode, water or dust control, core handling, access, protection, debris removal and completion records. Where the bore supports an MEP service, include the sleeve, fire-stopping or receiving-trade requirement so the finished geometry is understood.

Wet rig-based diamond coring is commonly used for reinforced concrete because water cools the system and carries cut material, but the final choice depends on diameter, depth, reinforcement, access and site controls.
02Can core drilling be completed without water?
Dry systems exist for suitable materials and equipment configurations. Dry work still needs effective dust extraction and must be appropriate for the substrate, bit, diameter and orientation.
03How is slurry controlled during core drilling?
Water collectors, bunding, wet vacuums and controlled supply can capture slurry at the drilling point. The exact setup depends on orientation, access and the sensitivity of surrounding areas.
04Should a slab be scanned before core drilling?
Where reinforcement, post-tensioning or concealed services may conflict with the bore, suitable scanning and engineering coordination should inform the final set-out.
